Militant Group In Lagos As 13 Feared Dead

It was gathered that 10 of the victims were killed Thursday night, while the remaining were killed at about 10am. The first incident occurred at Ola-Imam area of Elepete when the militants allegedly engaged some security volunteers in a battle while the second incident occurred at Phase 1 area. The attacks were a continuation of reprisal attacks on Elepete and Muti communities by militants which started Monday, as residents deserted the areas. Few residents who returned to Elepete, formed a volunteer vigilante group to secure the community only for the militants to attack them, killing 10 members of the vigilante group. As returnees fled the area by Friday morning, the militant launched another attack around 10am killing three.

CBN sustains dollar auction, Naira records first gain.

The sustained auction of the dollar at the interbank by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), yesterday strengthened the Naira from the beginning of transactions to the end, as it recorded straight gains. The Naira, which closed at N282 per dollar yesterday, gaining N2 from Tuesday’s record of N284, was supported by sustained auction by CBN. By the guidelines of the new forex policy, the apex is to play in the market as a participant, just like banks and other foreign currency earning institutions in the country. The Executive Director, Finance, BGL Capital Limited, Femi Ademola, said the market is gradually adjusting to the dynamics. FG Lines Up 15 Witnesses Against Saraki, Ekweremadu

The Federal Government has lined up 15 witnesses as it is set to open its case against Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu. Both men have been charged to court alongside the Clerk and Deputy Clerk of the National Assembly, Salissu Maikasuwa and Benedict Efeturi for allegedly forging the Senate Standing Rules 2015. In the court summons pasted on the Notice Board of the National Assembly on Tuesday, about 15 witnesses were listed by the Federal Government to testify against the defendants. Among the witnesses are Senator Solomon Ewuga, Senator Ita Enang, Senator Ajayi Borrofice, Senator Kabiru Marafa, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, Senator Abu Ibrahim, Senator Ahmad Lawan and David Igbodo, an Assistant Superintendent of Police. Trial of Saraki, Ekweremadu, others over alleged forgery begins today.

Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, will be arraigned before a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory today on charges of criminal conspiracy and forgery of the upper legislative chamber’s Standing Rules, 2015. Saraki and Ekweremadu are being charged along with two others, a former Clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Salisu Abubakar Maikasuwa and his deputy, Mr. Benedict Efeturi. The Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, reiterated in a statement yesterday that the development negated the principle of separation of powers and was capable of endangering the nation’s democracy. The charges were filed through the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation. This means that Saraki, who is also on trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), over alleged false assets declaration and corruption, will appear, yet again, before another court for trial. House pledges thorough probe Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, says the three members of the House accused of sexual misconduct in the United States of America (USA), remain innocent until proven guilty. In a statement issued by his spokesman Turaki Hassan, the Speaker expressed the view while responding to questions on the allegations on his Twitter handle, even as he urged Nigerians to refrain from passing judgment and wait for the outcome of investigation by the parliament. “Judgment can only be passed when an allegation is proven,” the Speaker argued, stressing, as ambassadors of the House and indeed, the entire country, the members in the middle of the scandal would have known not to bring dishonour to the institution they represent. Boko Haram Kills Seven Police Officers

The terrorist group Boko Haram has killed seven police officers in Niger Republic, the Interior Minister Mohamed Bazoum said on Saturday. The terrorists attacked the village of N’Gagam near the Nigerian border on Friday evening, Bazoum said. Urgence Diffa, which monitors the security and humanitarian situation in the area, reported that the attackers arrived in vehicles and opened fire on the police officers in the village. The village is located in an area where many refugees live. Bazoum had visited the village, located some 40 kilometres from the town of Diffa, with a delegation just a few hours before the attack. Boko Haram is an extremist Sunni organisation that launches regular offensives in Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon with the ultimate goal of setting up a fundamentalist theocracy under a strict interpretation of Islamic law. A former Chairman of the United States House Intelligence Committee, Pete Hoekstra, has condemned President Muhammadu Buahri-led government, stating that the President’s policies in running Nigeria were obsolete. He made this assertion in an opinion article he recently wrote in the US-based Wall Street Journal, titled, “Buhari is Nigeria problem, not its solution”. His article was in response to Buhari’s article in the same journal titled, “The three changes Nigeria needs.” The President had written that the country needed to restore trust, rebalance economy and regenerate growth. Former Minister of State for Defence, Mr. Musiliu Obanikoro, has dragged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission before a Federal High Court in Lagos over an alleged breach of his fundamental human rights. Obanikoro who is currently in the U.S. is demanding the sum of N100m as general damages for the alleged unlawful and unconstitutional forceful seizure, detention and/or freezing of several items, properties and personal effects belonging to him and members of his family by the EFCC on June 14, 2016. Other applicants in the suit are Mrs. Fati Obanikoro, Alhaja Moroophat Obanikoro, Gbolahan Obanikoro and Babajide Obanikoro. The EFCC had last Tuesday raided the Ikoyi, Lagos homes of the former minister over his alleged involvement in the $2.1bn arms deal under the Jonathan administration. Boko Haram Launches Radio Station

According to a report monitored on the Hausa service of the Voice of America, the Islamist sect, Boko Haram has established an FM radio station. Residents in Tolkomari, which is in the far northern part of Cameroon, have confirmed receiving broadcast messages from the sect via the radio station on 96.8 frequency modulation. The Voice of America report said the station broadcast mainly propaganda materials to counter media reports of victories by troops from Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger Republic against the Boko Haram militants. The report said the Cameroonian government is worried by the new development and has commenced investigations towards locating the radio station, which is said to be on the Nigeria-Cameroon border.

A Murang’a Court in Kenya has sentenced a primary school teacher to 90 years in prison for sexually assaulting 10 male pupils. According CCTV Africa, the teacher, known as Mugi, 23, indecently assaulted the 10 boys at a school in the country’s Kiharu Constituency between January and May 2015. The boys, aged between 13 and 16, testifying against Mugi, who was also their boarding master, said that he fondled their private parts and kissed them after night preps. The court ordered that the gay teacher will serve nine years for each assault, saying that the sentences will run consecutively.

NLC Spits Fire Over Sacked Bank Workers

The Nigeria Labour Congress has issued a 14-days ultimatum to six banks to recall all sacked workers or face a nationwide industrial action. The NLC said this in a letter to the managements of the six banks, signed by the Deputy General Secretary, Mr. Chris Uyot, on behalf of the President, Mr. Ayuba Wabba. The congress issued the ultimatum following information by the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees that the banks embarked on arbitrary mass sacking of workers without adherence to labour laws. State Task Force Headquarters, Alausa. Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit, popularly known as Task Force, has arrested a notorious ‘Awawa Boys’ leader, Tobi Akinbayo, a.k.a Scorpion. Akinbayo was arrested with two others, Muyideen Olayinka and Ibrahim Olaniran, at Aluminum Village, Dopemu, Agege area of Lagos State.
